langmaker.com
this is a website dedicated to created languages, such as clingon. yea, clingon seems to be legit, just as long as the people who speak it are actually interested in linguistics as it is relevant to culture and human thought. there's a bunch of languages, I haven't really looked at any, I just read about it in the newspaper and i really dig the idea, I'm not so sure that the apparent 2 thousand languages documented have the same idea about it as they should, but who am I to say that. linguistics is one of those things i want to have time to get a degree in because its one of those things that i think can help to encapsulate the idea of modern humanity in a persons mind. i regard those things, so far, there could be more, as anthropology, philosophy, psycology, and linguistics; i leave history out because people get a significant dose of it when studying other things, memorizing what happened when is pretty much entirely useless, the important thing is to know what has and what hasnt worked in human history.
so, linguistics. go.

Yeah linguistics are pretty awesome. I dont know if ill have time to take it this year...
I met some kids from Hawaii, one took 4 years of Hawaiian in high school. I learned a lot in my 5 minute talk with him, but he lives across the hall from me so im sure ill have the chance to find out more.
Made up languages seem kinda silly to me, considering that there are so many languages out there that are products of thousands of years of human developement...not a scifi show that got canceled...
More on this later i supose, im tired as hell they really dont give you much of a break at oreintation week...
with this article, and with some shout-outs from my moral/ethics philosophy teacher im coming to under the impression that star trek was unfortunatlely turned into an idiots obsession rather than an apparently very intelligent series. from what ive gathered it mixes many political traditions, formalism and what not, and adding shit like spock who is from an entirely rationalist species. im sure there is some legit thought behind this conlang stuff, but like i said many many of them are probably crap.
about the actual languages though, in the intelligent cases, are legitimate study on human thought and things of that nature; creating languages has a few times tried to be used as an experiment, using varied sentence structure, word order, and looseness of meaning, etc, but to the best of my knowledge has never been successfully done, it may well be a waste of time when more pressing matters can be tended to, but i think in a few cases it is farr from silly, and something worth thinking about.
